Wendy Murray
Fiction as Both Sacred and Profane
Writing true fiction requires venturing into uncharted creative depths, where powerful imaginative forces emerge, often stirring fear and doubt. As believers, we can navigate these mysterious waters with confidence, trusting God meets us there to dispel fear and illuminate our path.
Drawing from her personal journey as a Christian writer, Wendy Murray shares how surrendering to God-given imagination fosters profound spiritual surprises as well as literary depth in a work of fiction. Participants will discuss overcoming self-doubt and discomfort, while tackling thorny issues like depicting realistic characters—those whose lives reflect complexities, weakness, at times vulgarity, and always grace. By portraying the world honestly—street punks alongside saints—fiction reveals hearts longing for God.
Key topics include: the setting and its role in plot and theme; building believable characters from real life; characterization techniques and point of view; crafting realistic dialogue; and mastering plot through conflict and scenes.
Wendy Murray’s novel, The Warrior King, was published 2011 by Ecco Qua Press and is being re-published this year on her Substack: https://wendymurray.substack.com/

The Beauty of Collaborative Writing
Waiting for one’s book to be born can be discouraging, the publication process long and slow. That, however, is the time to “hone one’s craft” as the great encourager Cecil Murphey has said. Finding opportunities to grow as a writer is key, but how? The gift of writing collaboratively offers weary, frustrated writers a landing place to 1) share their stories, 2) meet others who share their passion, and 3) hone their craft by following submission guidelines. Her own debut novel having taken nearly two decades to reach publication, author Maureen Miller shares from experience. In the waiting, she discovered the joy of what she calls “teamwork writing,” and today is published in nearly thirty collaborative works. In this practical, interactive workshop, Maureen will share helpful dos and don’ts to improve one’s success that he or she might enjoy, rather than dread, those long, waiting-for-publication seasons.
